Most of the Internet traffic in Poland goes through PLIX, located in LIM Center (Hotel Marriott).
Last Friday's (May 14, 2010) power blackout and lack of availability of the backup power source (diesel generator powers on only some of the servers located in LIM) caused serious outage of the IP exchange in Poland. Many banks and other institutions were unavailable. The outage duration is estimated for 2 hours. It's also worth to mention that the batteries powered servers for only 12 minutes, from 12:18 until 12:30.
Probably it's the last call for Polish Authorities to verify disaster preparedness of the institutions and companies managing critical elements of the Polish Internet infrastructure, before more serous problems arises.
It's also discussed, why the critical part of the Internet Exchange is located in the heart of the city in one of the skyscrapers - possible target for terrorists.
The story has been widely covered by press and media including TVN24

Andrzeju, przecież to nie do końca prawda. Prawdą jest to, że niektórzy providerzy używają jedynie połączeń w budynku hotelu, nie zaś samego PLIX.
